OPENING DAY OF QUALIFYING COMPLETE AT HEARTLAND PARK TOPEKA; MEYER, ANDERSON LEAD FIELDS

TOPEKA, Kan. - Rain shortened the first day of racing at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Heartland Championships presented by KanEquip and Aeromotive at Heartland Park Topeka but that did not keep Randy Meyer of Spring Hill, Kan., from leading the qualifiers in the Top Alcohol Dragster class while Erie, Colo.'s Paul Anderson set the pace in Top Alcohol Funny Car. Racers in the two alcohol-fueled classes were slated to get two passes today but had to settle for one as the rain returned in the afternoon forcing NHRA and track officials to call it a day. They'll get one more chance tomorrow to make the eight-car eliminations field.

Meyer made a 5.459-second, 255.77 mph run to put him ahead of Shawn Cowie of Richmond, B.C. Cowie was just off the pace with a 5.474-second run at 260.76 mph.

Anderson wheeled his Charger to a 5.727-second, 252.80 mph lap which was good enough to keep him ahead of No. 2 qualifier Steve Harker of Gainesville, Ga. Harker's 5.730-second run at 250.97 mph was not enough to cover Anderson.

Thomas Schmidt, Lindstrom, Minn., is the top qualifier in Comp Eliminator while Super Stock competitor David Bogner, Kearney, Neb., tops his class. Robert Shaw, Sedalia, Mo., set the pace in Stock Eliminator, Tom Harger, Des Moines, Iowa, heads up the Top Dragster field, David Oenes, Henderson, Colo., is No. 1 in Top Sportsman and Plattsmouth, Neb., resident Robert Cooper leads the Sportsman Motorcycle field.

Racing continues Sunday at Heartland Park Topeka. Gates open at 7 a.m. and final qualifying and time trials are slated from 8 a.m. to noon. Eliminations start at noon. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have a final qualifying pass at 11:30 a.m. and run first round of eliminations at 6 p.m.
